And so another Sunbeam mixer is welcomed into the flock! Over Memorial Day weekend, my husband did a bit of rummaging and picked up the newest appliance for my growing collection, the Model 9 mixer in the foreground with the juicer attachment. It's in better condition than it's twin (almost) standing just behind AND we were lucky to get the original manual! For the back story on the previous two, read more here.
Here are a few pages showcasing all the attachments available for purchase. Thirteen in all, including: meat grinder/food chopper, drink mixer, slicer/shredder, butter churn, colander, can opener, bean slicer, ice cream freezer, coffee grinder, knife sharpener, polisher, pea sheller and potato peeler (click on any image to enlarge).
So I think a bit of organizing in the pantry is warranted as I have no counter space left, it being totally consumed by vintage machinery. But you can be sure that these mixers have not seen their last bowl of frosting . . . or in today's case, a Lazy Daisy Cake destined for strawberries and cream! I don't collect antiques only to support my love affair with the dust cloth, but to use them in all their vintage glory!
Fab find! I'm a huge mixer nerd too, but since I do experimental baking for a living I think that's kind of part of my job right? That's what I'm going to tell myself for now at least... Anyways love the catalog you got! I keep wanting to get one of these old Sunbeams but I just don't have the counter space right now. Glad to see yours is being put to good use!
ReplyDeleteOooh. I have a Model 9, too, and I love her very much. I use it even though I don't have the right bowl or even the spinner tray. A bit heavy as a hand mixer, but we make it work! Congrats on the great addition! You'll be together many years, I'm sure!
ReplyDeleteThe catalog is awesome! I'm reading thru it like a magazine. lol Mrs. Florence, you made me laugh because my first 1940s Sunbeam didn't have any bowls, and my second 1950s Sunbeam had four! So my hubby retro-fitted the 50s tray to fit the 40s machine and voila! everybody's happy! And yes, they are crazy heavy to use as a hand mixer.
ReplyDeleteHere's the story behind the first two http://willowhomestead.blogspot.com/2011/04/before-you-go.html
We have a similar Sunbeam. When one of the mixing blades finally broke (it was old, after all, and used daily for who knows how many years before we got it) we were amazed to find a replacement for it with no effort. Not only do these "antique" workhorses keep on going, having replacement parts still around is simply amazing. These are the best!
ReplyDeleteThings were built to last back then. Now they are built to be replaced every few years! This is terrific! Congrats on your find!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, this made me giggle as my husband is TOTALLY addicted to vintage kitchen appliances. I think he has 3 Sunbeam mixers and every time we see another one he has to check it out and tell me what a good deal it is. Hahaha!
ReplyDeleteTotally relate to the no more space thing. We've got them covering our hoosier cabinet and now they've migrated to the floor next to it as well.
My Mom has one like those. I use to kid her growing up that it came over on Noah's Ark. Here I am 30 years old and it is still working.
ReplyDeleteVintage kitchen appliances are like vintage Singers - they never die! Sure they don't have all the bells and whistles of modern ones, but they never leave you stranded. :)
ReplyDeleteLove the mixers!
ReplyDeleteI have a vintage sewing machine. I love it. No bells and whistles, but it is a work horse.
Cool I never knew there were so many different attachments!
ReplyDeleteI just wrote a post about my mixer -its a 1955 Sunbeam Mixmaster

-So glad its working again!
Yes, it's possible to "geek out" over a stand mixer! :-) Great post.
ReplyDeleteI still miss my 1948 Hamilton Beach mixer. We got rid of it after The Tragic Banana Bread Incident wherein I caught my hand in the blades *ugh* and Sweetheart had to cut the blades off of my hand. I'd still be using it otherwise.
ReplyDeleteKimberly - OUCH! My mom has a '65 Hamilton Beach and she swears by it. Purrs like a kitten!
ReplyDeleteI have a pink one if you want it.
