Nothing like new overalls!

Last week when the weather was warm (well, not really, but at least it was sunny), I convinced Hank to snap a few shots of my new overalls.  Confession #1:  He had his 1951 Oshkosh Truck out for a test drive, and I couldn't pass up the photo op.

I used the Decades of Style 1930s Sweetheart Overalls.  The first time I made this pattern using a  pink cotton/poly, but I wasn't 100% happy with the fit.  They came out too baggy so this time I cut a smaller size.

The bib and waistband are fully lined for extra, girdle-like support.

I also added an additional dart from the armpit to bust to take up the slack.  The bib fits much nicer this time.  If I lined the bust a bit better, I could almost wear it without a bra.  Cut the pants off into shorts, and I could see this as a cute, beach playsuit in a fun Depression-print floral.

Confession #2:  I may have overdone it a bit with downsizing the pattern, as evidenced by this photo.  These overalls aren't, perhaps, as functional as they are flattering.  And apparently I haven't burned off my Easter jelly beans yet.  I'm going to blame it on the weather and my lack of outdoor activity because, here in Wisconsin, we're all still anxiously waiting for Spring.

But I think they'll be fun this summer for glamping and knocking about.  These overalls were a result of my military sweater make-over.  After I trimmed out the sweater, I had fabric leftover, and Heaven forbid I actually put it back in the cupboard!  Use it up!  That's the name of the game around here.

Those of you wondering about the truck, this is Hank's winter project.  It's a 1951 Oshkosh Truck, built right here in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, originally for use with the county highway service.  Hank has done massive amounts of work on it, everything from lowering it a full 2 feet in height to swapping in a modern diesel engine.  Last bit of work is to build the bed.  He likes to say that there isn't a piece on it that he hasn't taken off, modified and put back.  Confession #3:  This is the baddest farm truck on the block!

So I hope that Spring has found its way to you, and if you should need something hauled, let me know.

  2. Great overalls! I love Decades Of Style. I was wondering which size you made and how much room you have in the bum area. I would love to make this pattern, but I think I may need a bigger size from the waist down. I just don't know how I would solve that pickle ;)

    1. I cut the smallest size...a 32, I think? Typically I wear a size 6 and there is enough room in the hip and seat. It's the waist that's my problem. lol

  5. Love the overalls and the truck! The sweater looks great with them, as well. As far as the overalls not being functional, do you have any that are? I made myself some 30s overalls that have buckle straps and buttons up the side and haven't yet discovered how to easily perform without major hassle certain functions of a umm... bathroom-type.

  6. Oh how I wish we were closer! You are such an inspiration! If I could only be 1/8th as productive as you, I'd have something going for myself! The overalls are a dream!

  7. I know huh Lolita!!! I think that all the time too, Bopeep you have so much energy I can't keep up. Love the overalls and those pictures are awesome!!!! That truck looks great too. We just got a totally dumping of at least 4 or 5 inches I just trudged out with the dog in it. I saw a few cars in the ditch on the way home from work and almost spun out myself. We have been just plain old crabby in these parts waiting for spring to come and stay a while.

    1. Oh trust me, folks are crabby here too! lol It seems we have one afternoon of sunshine followed by 3-4 days of drizzle, wind and cold. My only survival tactic right now is to force myself to keep sewing.
